What is the best time of year to come to Laos ?
Every season has pros and cons. Laos has three seasons.
The hot season from March to May, is generally hot and very dry. Cool cotton clothes, sunhats, sun cream and lots of drinking water are essential at this time of the year. The water levels in the rivers can drop quite rapidly. Amazing rock formations jut up out of the river and the local villagers spend a lot of time on the riverbanks.
The rainy season from June to November, obviously has rain fall to contend with, but the scenery is lush and green, the rivers high, and the local produce is fresh and abundant. There are often fewer tourists, which means that prices are lower and restaurants, hotels and tourist activities and sites are less busy. As the rain subsides and the swollen river levels drop, crops are planted along the river banks. The weather is still quite warm, and often hot and sunny during the day.
The cold season from November to February, is the busiest time of the tourist year for Laos. Visitors from colder climates will probably not find it too cold, but temperatures can drop to around 15 degrees during the day, and even lower overnight. You should bring a warm wind proof jacket with you during this time. During this time of the year, morning fogs give the scenery photos a very romantic touch and once these have burned off, the skies are usually a vivid blue.
